MEETING POINT & PICKUP
We can meet you at your hotel, at the Galataport cruise terminal, or directly in Fener/Balat — whichever is easiest for you. Because the neighborhood is a little way from the Old City, we’re happy to arrange a private vehicle if you’d prefer not to travel there on your own.
DRESS CODE FOR RELIGIOUS SITES
This walk passes churches and, depending on your route, may include a mosque. When entering any place of worship, please dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered. If a working mosque is included, women should also cover their hair with a scarf, and shoes are removed before the carpeted area. A light scarf in your bag covers every situation.
GOOD TO KNOW
- The neighborhood is genuinely hilly, with steep cobblestone streets — comfortable shoes are essential.
- Balat is quietest and best for photos on weekday mornings.
- Some shops and cafés are small and cash-friendly; bring a little Turkish lira.
- This is a walking tour through a residential area — please be respectful of people’s homes and privacy.
- Getting around: unless you request a private vehicle, we travel by public transport — bus and ferry along the Golden Horn, as needed. Fares are small and your guide helps you pay.
WHAT TO BRING
Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes · a camera or phone for photos · a light scarf · water · some local currency for a café stop.
SUITABILITY / ACCESSIBILITY
Best for travelers comfortable with steep hills, steps and uneven cobblestones. Not ideal for wheelchairs or those with significant mobility limitations on foot — but tell us your needs and we’ll adapt the route or arrange a vehicle for the steepest sections.
